Vehicle Theft
How can you protect your vehicle from theft?
-
First, always lock up your vehicle. Whether you leave
your car for a minute or for several hours, roll up the windows, lock it,
and take the keys.
-
Do not leave your car unattended while you warm it up.
Don’t hide spare keys in you car.
-
Park in a busy well-lit area.
-
Carry your registration with you. Don’t leave any
personal identification documents anywhere in the vehicle.
-
Don’t keep valuables in your car. If you must, then
keep them hidden in your trunk. There are also many theft prevention devices
available on the market today.
-
If you don’t normally operate you vehicle between the
hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM you may want to register your vehicle in the
“Watch Your Car” program. This allows police to stop your vehicle between
these hours and determine whether the driver is legally allowed to be using
your vehicle.
Most auto thefts occur during the nighttime hours. Check
out WWW.MDAUTOTHEFT.ORG
or call 1-800-96-theft for more information.
